Congratulations to the 38 Queensland councils who received their share of $60 million in funding from Round 6 Building our Regions (BoR) – Infrastructure Stream.

This funding program focuses on delivering enduring economic outcomes for regional communities, with infrastructure projects that create jobs that will improve local economic conditions and liveability. 

Minister for Regional Development and Manufacturing and Minister for Water, The Honourable Glenn Butcher said round 6 of Building our Regions is dedicated to construction and planning projects, for water and sewerage infrastructure.

“Water and sewerage infrastructure is one of those things that aren’t top-of-mind, but are vital to good jobs, better services and the ongoing liveability of our wonder Queensland communities,” he said.

We’re proud to showcase a 100% success rate assisting 10 Queensland councils to secure almost $16 million across 20 separate EOIs and completed applications. With more than 24% of the total funding pool going to the councils we worked with, we’d like to take this moment to share some of their projects with you.

Here is a list of the full grant applications completed by the Peak Grants team on behalf of councils:

Carpentaria Shire Council  Water Reservoir Upgrade $1,992,917  
This project aims to undertake works to upgrade the ground reservoirs at Normanton Water Treatment to increase capacity to ensure continuity of water supply for the residents of Carpentaria Shire. BoR6_Carpentaria Shire Council_Water Reservoir.
Carpentaria Shire Council  Glenore Weir Water Pipe Replacement $295,000  
This project will undertake planning work to upgrade the existing water pipeline in Carpentaria Shire, running from the Glenore Weir to the Normanton Water Treatment Plant, some 23 kilometres in distance. This pipeline provides the raw water supply for the townships of Normanton and Karumba and is essential for ongoing water security. Carpentaria Glenore Weir
Burke Shire Council Smart Water Meter Project $842,875  

This project looked at upgrading the old mechanical water meters in Gregory and Burketown to new Smart Water Meters and an Intelligent Water Network.

This enables the townships to improve their water supply security, by mitigating water loss and enhancing water demand management.  Remote monitoring allows Council to respond faster to maintenance issues and reduce unnecessary travel time during the wet season. The benefits to Council and community are a more efficient service, employee safety, customer empowerment and ultimately greater revenue.

Burke Shire Council  Burke Shire and Doomadgee Aboriginal Shire Water Security Strategy $485,000  
This important project will allow the Burke Shire and Doomadgee Aboriginal Shire to develop a comprehensive water security strategy to ensure the sustainability of drinking water for both shires that share the same river catchments. The strategy will involve water source options analysis; address the effects of drought, floods and climate change; a demand management plan; water demand projections; water restrictions and emergency water supply trigger points; and an emergency water supply plan.  Burke Shire Council Building
Burke Shire Council Gregory Water Treatment Plant Upgrade $1,211,310  

This project focuses on upgrades to the Gregory Water Treatment Plant (GWTP). Ultimately the upgrades are aimed at improving the GWTP’s ability to produce high quality drinking water, more efficiently and reliably.

The outcome of undertaking this upgrade will be to provide a more resilient and automated water treatment plant that will provide greater reliability of the quality control for the drinking water in the very remote community of Gregory.

Gympie Regional Council Southside Residential Infill Sewer Project (Stage 8) $1,322,922  

This project is Stage 8 of the Southside Residential Infill Sewer Project. The project will construct sewerage reticulation mains in the established areas of Southside, Gympie. The project will allow existing properties to connect to Council's sewer network. This project allows Council to mitigate health and environmental risks associated with the ageing onsite septic treatment systems currently utilised in this area. This project also allows Council to deliver on their future growth and development strategies.

Gympie Regional Council Gympie Jones Hill Reservoir Upgrade $650,000  

This project will construct a new above ground water reservoir to replace the ageing Jones Hill Underground Water Reservoir, in Gympie Shire, which has reached end of life.  The reservoir is critical to the production of potable water for the main Water Treatment Plant in Gympie. This project will also augment potable water storage for the Southside Sewerage Project, a program to construct and operate reticulated sewerage networks in the local area to allow connection for residents and to phase out the septic systems.

Kowanyama Aboriginal Shire Council  Kowanyama Essential Services Facility  $650,000  
This project involves the construction of an integrated essential services facility to house all water and sewerage operations. The integrated facility would include the following key essential operational facilities and activities: A A dedicated laboratory room; Chlorine storage; Storage of water and sewerage consumable pipework/fittings; and, Essential services vehicles and equipment security. This project will protect and better coordinate all Councils' essential water services equipment services and operations.  Kowanyama Town Water + Chlorine stores.jpg
Quilpie Shire Council
Toompine Town Bore Replacement $670,548  

The project will replace the existing 1918 circa failing town bore with a new bore, cooling ponds and pumping infrastructure to provide greater service capacity for the region's water supply to meet the current and future needs of the region.

Quilpie Shire Council Quilpie Sewage Treatment Plant Replacement $299,965  
Quilpie Shire Council was successful in their planning application to upgrade and construct a new Sewerage Treatment Plant. The existing plant has reached the end of its life and is failing; too much organic load is reaching the waterways, and this needed to be rectified. The new treatment plant will offer the Shire enhanced agricultural irrigation, odour reduction and future security in the system that will be capable of higher demand periods during peak tourist seasons.   Quilpie Sewage Treatment Plant
Barcoo Shire Council  Jundah Water Treatment Plant Replacement $248,041  
This project involves developing a detailed Jundah Water Treatment Plant replacement plan. This project will develop detailed designs and costings for the most suitable options for a long-term water security solution for the Barcoo region, which covers an area of 61,974 square kilometres in far Western Queensland.  Barcoo River
Balonne Shire Council  Balonne Water Security and Cooling Plan  $300,000  
This project will engage a Consultant Hyrodolgist to develop a business case, conduct community consultation, develop detailed designs and costings for the most suitable options for a long-term water security solution for the Balonne Shire. This important planning project will result in a shovel ready best option project for future funding opportunities.  Balonne_BoR6
Mornington Shire Council Water Security Study $40,000  
This project will plan a long term water security solution to improve liveability and amenity on Mornington Island and importantly solve the critical need to address water shortages on the Island. Specifically, this project will investigate raising the dam wall.  This project will improve water security and provide economic benefits through retained employment, tourism and meet the needs of future planned developments in agriculture and tourism. As a very remote community, having water security and high-quality water supply is critical for maintaining community wellbeing, health and future growth.
